Properly done the soap treatment is relatively resilient, but requires more frequent washing than oil or lacquered wooden floors and are not as robust as oil and varnish .

You can either choose a natural soap – if you have lye finished floor, it will in this case, yellowing slightly – or you can use a special soap with added white pigment to highlight and preserve the white-washed look. The different types of soap can be purchased at paint dealers, hardware stores and well-stocked supermarkets.

Mix the soap with water according to the supplier’s instructions. Spread the soap in the clean wooden floor in an even layer with a floor cloth, mop or broom. Wipe the floor with a damp cloth. Soap action is repeated at least 3 times to saturate the wood and the floor to dry between each treatment. On hardwoods such as ash and oak should be used as little water as possible by soap treatment.

The floor is swept with a soft broom or vacuuming with a brush with soft bristles to prevent scratching. Then wash the floor with the same type of soap as the initial treatment. Sometimes you can wash with soap flakes, which both cleans well and gives the wood a dirt surface.
