Five Years Down the Drain

Monday, January 23rd, 2012

I cannot believe that, after five years of making my way through the New York City corporate circle, it all comes down to this. All my bags are packed, my boxes all sealed. The overseas moving company that I hired to take care of the shipment of all my belongings will be knocking on the door any minute. On my friend’s door. How did I get here? The answer is love.

I came to New York City to find new opportunities. I am sure it is a story we have all heard before. I did find what I was looking for and then more. After months of searching for a company that would sponsor me, I met a man and fell in love. We got married only after one year. This lifted my company’s visa sponsorship because I automatically carried a conditional status as a wife of a US citizen. The conditions of this status is that we stay married for five years or have a child together, or else Homeland Security will boot me out of the country. Obviously, the five years and the child did not happen. So, I have to leave. All that years of hard work down the drain.

Monday, July 25th, 2011

The constant repetition of the paradise motif in tourist brochures, on websites and in the travel supplements of national newspapers can sometimes fool tourists into thinking, when they arrive at their destination, that they have actually got there, despite the mismatch between reality and archetype. However, in spite of the crowds and commercialism, some destinations can feel like mythical places. For example, holidays to the Caribbean, can give the impression of being in one of the most isolated places on earth, like the Gardens of the Hesperides, or the Fortunate Isles, the winterless home of the happy dead. Of course, British and Hollywood aristocracy have long been attracted to Jamaica’s idyllic shoreline, from Winston Churchill and Ian Fleming to Marilyn Monroe and Arthur Miller. Writing About Rental Car Coupons for Thanksgiving

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

Okay, so I have to talk about Rental Car Coupons again, but since this is really only being written for Google and that’s just a dumb search engine no matter all the hype I just have to mention the keyword, rental car coupons, for stupid ol’ Google’s web-crawler to pick up and that’s that — so let me talk about something else now.

It’s Thanksgiving 2010, and I’m working, putting out blurbs or short text strings designed to catch Google’s notice for SEO purposes. Long story, covered in other stream-of-consciousness blurbs like this one — but here I want to talk about Thanksgiving this year. It’s my best ever yet, and I’m very grateful. Even this gig, writing blurbs, is cool. I write complete a blurb every five minutes, which means I make eighteen dollars an hour — not bad, considering I can stop and go anytime, and all from the comfort of home, too!
